Book Beginnings on Friday (3)

Book Beginnings on Friday at Rose City Reader is the place to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.

I've just started one that is a little different than what I usually read, The Ghost Bride: A Novel by Yangsze Choo.

"One evening, my father asked me whether I would I would like to become a ghost bride.  Asked is perhaps not the right word."

There is a Chinese custom that allows a family to find a wife for their son after he dies - our lead character had been asked to do this.  I'm fascinated by other cultures' traditions and I hadn't heard of this one before.  I'm hoping to learn a lot about it.
