Why Fiction?
After A Prolific Non-Fiction/Journalist Career…

By Taylor Marsh
Author of Beltway Betrayers

Call it an artist's evolution.

It began for me in ballet and tap shoes as soon as I could walk. I was lucky enough to land on Broadway, and on television.

I’ve been a writer, and journalist for many years, as well as a non-fiction author.

I spent 10 years in the dating, sex and relationship worlds. I was Relationship Consultant (my actual title) at the LA Weekly, then the nation’s top alternative newsweekly. From there I branched out. I spent years interviewing, writing, and talking to women and men about modern relationships, interviewing hundreds and hundreds of people.

There were so many stories, people who divulged all sorts of secrets to me. I knew there was something to mine in what I'd learned from people. But fiction? It was years before I could answer that question.

The switch to romantic fiction was sparked by a screenwriting competition funded by Meryl Streep.

In 2015, Streep announced “a screenwriters lab for women writers over 40,” which was sponsored by New York Women in Film and Television. It's still going strong.

[source: http://variety.com/2015/film/news/meryl-streep-women-screenwriters-lab-1201475337/)

The first thing I did was contact the publisher of my non-fiction books, who also happens to be the person most responsible for my writing career. I wanted to find a writing partner. I wasn't surprised by my publisher's response: You don't need a partner. I know you can write it.

It was exactly what I needed to hear.

The fun I had writing the screenplay stunned me, and the process of writing the story ignited something inside me.

I've been an avid reader of fiction my entire life, but writing romantic fiction was crossing into a fantasy world that I'd only enjoyed from the outside.

I excavated The Paris Review interviews with some of the great fiction writers, craving the voices of experience.

"… You want to let go. You want to lose yourself in language, become a carrier or messenger. The best moments involve a loss of control. It's a kind of rapture…" - Don DeLillo, The Paris Review

[source: https://www.theparisreview.org/interviews/1887/don-delillo-the-art-of-fiction-no-135-don-delillo]

One of my favorite articles on writing is by the great Elmore Leonard, for The New York Times, "Writers on Writing" (2001).  It is entitled, "Easy on the Adverbs, Exclamation Points and Especially Hooptedoodle."

I jumped into the romance genre with both feet, publishing my first novel in February 2016.

Beltway Betrayers took me to a new place as a writer.

It's the journey.

Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
At twenty-five, I met both my mortal enemy and my one true love.
The problem? They ended up being the same person.
My first encounter with Wade Welsecky and his swoon-inducing, chiseled torso was a disaster of epic proportions. After giving him an accidental strip show in a coffee shop and him stealing my Gucci blouse, I became determined to run that cocky jerk over.
That was the thing about Wade—even though he pushed all my buttons, I so badly wanted him to undo them too.
Our second encounter was even worse. This time, I really did try to run him over…
…but ended up running right into a tree.
Now I’m stuck in Middle-of-Nowhere, Wisconsin with only one person in town who can help with my car troubles. That’s right. My mortal enemy, Wade Welsecky.
But with Wade as swelteringly hot as the Midwest summer, getting tangled in his sheets is quickly becoming a temptation too hard to resist. And I have a feeling I’m about to uncover a side of him that is so much more than just the sexy junk yard owner—a side the rest of the world seemingly already knows.
If I don’t run him over first…

Chloe
I know I shouldn't covet my sister's ex-boyfriend.
She may have wanted nothing to do with his BDSM lifestyle, but I'm a born submissive. And the only place I want to be is under Simon's command.
But he won't go near me. Not with the memory of her so close.
That leaves me no choice. If he won't touch me when he knows who I am, I'll have to come to him in disguise.
He's worth the risk. I'm meant to be his. Now I just have to prove it to him.

Being a Dominant cost me my first love, but I can't deny who I am. I won't. Control and power are everything, and the way I keep mine is by playing only with experienced subs. No exceptions.

Bad Penny by Staci Hart ~ Cover Reveal

BAD PENNY CR BANNER.jpg

Bad Penny, an all-new romantic comedy standalone from Staci Hart is coming June 15th!

cover-wrap-penny.png

Title: Bad Penny

Author: Staci Hart

Cover Designer: Quirkybird Designs

Photographer: Lauren Watson Perry

Synopsis

Nothing good comes after the third date.
See, date three is the crucial point when things get real, which is exactly why I bounce out the door, twiddling my fingers at whatever poor boy I’ve left behind. Because if I stick around, one of three things will happen: he’ll profess his undying love, he gets weird and stalky, or I’ll go crazy. Like, Sid and Nancy crazy. Like, chase-him-through-the-streets-begging-him-to-love-me crazy.
Seriously, it’s better for everyone this way.
So when I meet Bodie, I figure it’ll be the same as it ever was. It doesn’t matter that he doesn’t put a single string on me. Doesn’t matter that he’s funny and smart and jacked and can play my body like a grand piano. Because even though I’m built for love, love has only carved me up like a Christmas ham.
Resistance is something I can only hang on to for so long, and he has persistence in spades. But my heart isn’t as safe as I want to believe, and neither is his. And the second I ignore my cardinal rule is the second I stand to lose him forever.

About the Author

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life -- a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey. From roots in Houston to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she's not writing, she's reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics. AuthorPics

The Sin Bin by Nikky Kaye ~ Review

Title: The Sin Bin
Author: Nikky Kaye
Genre: Erotic Romance
Publisher: Self-published
Release Date: May 20, 2017
Reviewed by: Jasmyn

“Nothing gets into my crease, Lucy. I still hold the league shutout record. But you snuck between my legs and now I can’t get you out of my head.”
BECKETT
Lucy Solomon showed up to watch a hockey game in a luxury box wearing jeans and a hoodie, and she didn't give a puck who I was. Now the hotter it gets between us the better my team does on the ice, and I'm getting superstitious. I'm not skating around my feelings--I want to win the playoffs, and I want Lucy, but something's gotta give.

LUCY
After being in a grad school cave for two years, it made sense that I'd be drawn to a Neanderthal. I melted for Beckett Hallstrom's brazen moves and boyish charm when we first met, but things exploded when I found out who he really was. Beck wants me to be his good luck charm, but the press is relentless and now my career is in jeopardy. Every competition has a loser and I'm afraid it's going to be me losing my heart.

THE SIN BIN is a fast and feverish standalone sports romance novella, where high sticking is totally allowed.

**********
I never realized how little I knew about hockey, so I could completely relate to Lucy in this respect. She was an amazing and fun character. Her shy boldness (you'll get what I mean) was just beyond adorable. When she agrees to sit in the super nice box seats at the playoff hockey game with her brother, she isn't sure what to expect - and it shows in her dressed-down appearance among all the women in designer dresses and handbags.

Beckett doesn't get off to a good start with her, but through a series of very fortunate events, Lucy grows on him and he can't stop thinking about her. Beckett was a pretty standard alpha male, but his role in the hockey program was a little different. It was nice to see someone off the court instead of one of the current stars getting the girl.

Nikky Kaye's romances are short, hot, and sexy. She definitely didn't disappoint with The Sin Bin. The sex is off the charts hot and there's at least a hint of humor on every page. There was a little falling out between them about halfway through that I wish had more substance behind it and more fall-out after it. Also, I want Lucy's friend to get a hockey player now - any chance this could become a series? I hope so!

**********
Meshing strong women in a time period where men ruled.

What famous women can you think of from the British Regency period c.1795-1837? Off the top of my head, I came up with: Mary Shelley (writer of Frankenstein and wife of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley); Jane Austen; Queen Charlotte and Queen Caroline; Princess Charlotte (George IV's heir, who died in childbed); Lady Caroline Lamb (the poet Byron's mistress); and Lady Emma Hamilton (Admiral Lord Nelson's mistress).

Portrait of Emma Hart, later Lady Hamilton
So by my reckoning—and this is very much a personal opinion—in order for a woman to have any influence at a time when men held all the power, she had to be a well-educated writer of poetry or prose, have royal blood, or—and you can call me cynical—be prepared to welcome a powerful man to her bed.

I like to think there were other ways for Regency women to wield power besides the options above, and it is becoming increasingly clear, through the work of social historians, that there were. Just because there were rulebooks on etiquette, deportment and education for women which prepared them solely to become wives and mothers, does not mean that every woman followed these rules. In breaking them, some women found a freedom of which they had never before dreamed.
Princess Mary, one of George IV's daughters

My Regency heroines in Distracting the Duke and Unmasking the Earl are rule breakers. In my opinion, a story would be deadly dull if everyone behaved as they were supposed to. Lady Clara —from Distracting the Duke—is a widow, and can therefore be assumed to know her way around the bedchamber, although all is not what it seems on this score. However, Cassandra Blythe, heroine of Unmasking the Earl, is, except in her vivid imagination, a complete innocent at the start of the book. She does not yearn for power—what she wants is love, but gets rather more than she bargained for, and from a completely unexpected direction. But love, true love, brings a power all of its own, and we must imagine that Cassie, once she has secured her Happy Ever After, will use the power she has gained to make the world a better place. But how does she reach that Happy Ever After? You will just have to read the book and see.

Author Bio:
Elizabeth first started writing fiction when she was eight, encouraged to do so by her Head Teacher father, who needed something to keep her quiet during school holidays. Her favorite topics were mermaids, ghosts, Norman knights and quests, and she illustrated and decorated her own books. She emerged from the world of her imagination to read History at the University of London, after which she spent many years working as an archaeologist and artifact illustrator. She then became a primary school teacher, after which she moved to museum education work, and display and collections management.

Elizabeth has been involved in Medieval, Tudor, and English Civil War re-enactment and has enjoyed sword-play and traditional archery, excelling in neither. She lived for seven years on a Knights Templar estate in Essex where she pursued her interest in historical textiles, cookery and medicine. She loves anything to do with the past, and still looks down holes in the ground to see if there’s anything archaeological in them. There generally isn’t.

She has written fifteen historical romances since moving to the West of England in 1997, the landscape and history of which have inspired the “Wayward in Wessex” series. Book #1 in the series, “Distracting the Duke”, has recently been published by Entangled Publishing.

Amnesia

Publication date: June 12th 2017
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense
I washed ashore in a little lake town.
A place where everyone knows everyone, yet…
No one knows me.
I don’t know me.
If a woman doesn’t know her own name, does she really exist?
I don’t know my natural hair color, my birthdate, or where I live.
I am invisible.
To everyone, to everything, even to myself.
Except to him.

I see the recognition deep in his stare, the way it lingers on my face as if I’m a puzzle he’s desperate to put together.
I just want answers, the truth… knowledge.
His lips are sealed. Still, his eyes beguile me.

I can’t trust anyone, not even myself. Someone wants me dead, the same someone who tried to bury me in a watery grave.
They’ll come for me again… I won’t know their face.
I don’t even know mine.
I am amnesia.

Jarka Ruus by Terry Brooks ~ Review

More than a quarter of a century after "The Sword of Shannara" carved out its place in the pantheon of great epic fantasy, the magic of Terry Brooks's "New York Times" bestselling saga burns as brightly as ever. Three complete series have chronicled the ever-unfolding history of Shannara. But more stories are still to be told--and new adventures have yet to be undertaken. Book One of High Druid of Shannara invites both the faithful longtime reader and the curious newcomer to take the first step on the next extraordinary quest.

Twenty years have passed since Grianne Ohmsford denounced her former life as the dreaded Ilse Witch--saved by the love of her brother, the magic of the Sword of Shannara, and the destruction of her evil mentor, the Morgawr. Now, fulfilling the destiny predicted for her, she has established the Third Druid Council, and dedicated herself to its goals of peace, harmony among the races, and defense of the Four Lands. But the political intrigue, secret treachery, and sinister deeds that have haunted Druid history for generations continue to thrive. And despite her devotion to the greater good as Ard Rhys--the High Druid of Paranor, Grianne still has bitter enemies.

Among the highest ranks of the Council she leads lurk those who cannot forget her reign of terror as the Ilse Witch, who covet her seat of power, and who will stop at nothing to see her deposed . . . or destroyed. Even Grianne's few allies--chief among them her trusted servant Tagwen--know of the plots against her. But they could never anticipate the sudden, ominous disappearance of the Ard Rhys, in the dead of night and without a trace. Now, barely a step ahead of the dark forces bent on stopping him, Tagwen joins Grianne's brave young nephew, Pen Ohmsford, and the wise, powerful elf Ahren Elessedil on a desperate and dangerous mission of search and rescue--to deliver the High Druid of Shannara from an unspeakable fate.

**********
Starting into the next series-set of the Shannara world, we get started with some familiar faces - which I love. Grainne was redeemed in the previous series, and she is now the High Druid. But not everyone has forgiven and moved on. Her past still haunts her, and it's about to lead to some really nasty magic. Her own druids are set against her, and when she disappears mysteriously, there are none that seem to really care.

There are a few people loyal to her though, and they instantly set off on the quest to find Grainne's family and friends from her previous story. There's a lot of building blocks in this story, and not a ton of action. It comes in bits and pieces as the druids try to stop Grainne's friends from finding her or finding out what was done to her. But the Ohmsford family has always been a resourceful one, and they slip through tight places by the skin of their teeth.

At the end of the story, we're left with a little knowledge, but not a lot was done. I loved some of the characters, especially the new seer Pen meets on the way. There are betrayals and new friends, wins and losses, everything you might expect in a high fantasy story. I'm liking the groundwork laid so far, and this may be one of my favorite sets of characters yet. I'm excited to see what happens to Grainne next.

Their enemy is getting away. Their danger is just getting started…

Alice is in hiding. Holed up in a magically-protected house without her main weapon, the supernatural bounty hunter wants nothing more than to hunt Nyx down. But her enemy is in hiding too, and without her powers the dangerous Pain Children are more than a match for her.

When Alice learns that Isaac Moreau remains in Magistrate custody, she has no choice but to follow Nyx’s trail without backup. Her only chance to catch the villain may lie in Isaac’s attempt to learn the dark, deadly secret of the Void. His failure could get them all killed in the process.

**********
With Nyx on the loose, Alice has gone into hiding after losing her powers and is holed up in a magical safe-house. At the safe-house, we get to meet Cameron, who is one heck of a character. He's a gentle giant that quickly becomes part of Alice's close-knit group.

The Pain Children are some really nasty creatures. They each have their own crazy aspect that makes them quite deadly - and when they gather together - they are a near unstoppable force. No one knows what Nyx's goal is other than to cause havoc and pain. And that's just what she's doing.

Alice struggles to find her powers and learn how to harness them in new ways. Isaac is forced into an otherworldly battle that may cost him his soul. But if he wins, then he will emerge with a new power from a plane no one really knew how to access before. This battle was quite intense, but not in a physical way. Isaac is put to a moral and emotional test that really gives the reader a look into his past and what makes him tick deep inside.

All these events will come together in quite a fantastic way. New powers, new factions, and show-down with some really nasty baddies make this book a great read.
