In order to do that, Cyanide needs to work with Neo - an at times frustrating, but alluring vampire - chasing down leads and finding clues in an attempt at figuring out how deep the well goes. But this whole thing runs deep and black, and at the bottom of it are secrets, treacheries, and dangers she couldn't have imagined.

She has to find it within herself to persevere, because one of the girls who went missing is vitally important to her benefactor, and if she doesn't find this lost lamb, she may be stuck in Ashwood for a long time.

This is a thrilling, dark book, which deals with very real themes and issues. If you're ready to get sucked in and lose yourself in Cyanide's journey, discovering with her not only the many secret truths about the city she lives in, but also things about herself she never would have believed, then this is the book for you.

I have totally fallen in love with Ashwood. The first trilogy (Half-Lich) sucked me in fast, and The Dead Wolves has me hopping in my seat waiting for more. I love that the city is being brought to life in several shorter series that give me a chance to glimpse into different parts of the world. 

The Dead Wolves are vampires - I know - I thought they would be werewolves at first too. But they are vampires working against the system of archaic rules of the vampire court. Cyanide is our leading lady here, and she has some deep secrets. Ones that she even keeps from herself. It's quite interesting how it all comes out into the open finally.

The Dead Wolves are set on finding out what is happening to the women disappearing from all over the city. But Cyanide may not have her full heart in it - she just wants out. Away from the city, away from the court, away from everything wrong. There was a surprising depth to her character that was revealed and morphed throughout the story. By the end of the story, she's like a different person, but still familiar and somehow not changed at all. I can't wait to see where the mystery takes her in the next book.

And so we are going to Hell, meeting the Prince of Darkness, find out more about Astrid's family, save the world, and lots of other crazy stuff. Robyn Peterman is the Queen of crazy stuff and making it funny. There are laughs on every page of the story.

But it was too much. Somewhere about halfway through we went from amazing and funny to over the top in a not so good way. When Astrid is given a mission from the Devil and begins to meet her extended family tree, it just all sort of fell of apart in my mind. So many things didn't seem to really progess the story forward, but just fill gaps on the pages.

Eventually we get back on track and the ending was a pleasant surprise. Astrid will have to come face to face with her harsh past and find out if she can rise to the challenge to really overcome it. I found it surprisingly deep for a book that I had picked up for laughs and giggles, and it was really a great redeeming element that will keep me going in the series.

Meanwhile Alice Werner, the supernatural Bounty Hunter, has her hands full with an increasing number of contracts, and as Ashwood starts simmering toward a boiling point, it's only a matter of time until something gives and all hell breaks loose.

The conclusion to the Half-Lich series was a good one. Everything has been leading up to this moment, the moment where Chaos wins or loses, and of course, it's up to Alice and the newly found Order of Void Weavers to stop all the bad stuff from happening.

Once again, the authors have made the city of Ashwood and its residents come to life on the pages. From the random people on the street to the crazy ghosties and other various bad guys that have come through from the other side to the good guys that Alice has somehow managed to gather to fight them. Everything leads up to one epic battle that really didn't go the way I thought it would at all.

There's plenty of magic and special powers. I got to find out more about some of the bigger side characters and what they were and what they could do. But in this big epic battle, it wasn't all about who was the strongest. It came down to outthinking and just flat out refusing to back down.

I'm very excited that the Ashwood world is going to continue with a new series - not one revolving around Alice and friends - but I'm hoping it's just as good.

With Nyx on the loose, Alice has gone into hiding after losing her powers and is holed up in a magical safe-house. At the safe-house, we get to meet Cameron, who is one heck of a character. He's a gentle giant that quickly becomes part of Alice's close-knit group.

The Pain Children are some really nasty creatures. They each have their own crazy aspect that makes them quite deadly - and when they gather together - they are a near unstoppable force. No one knows what Nyx's goal is other than to cause havoc and pain. And that's just what she's doing.

Alice struggles to find her powers and learn how to harness them in new ways. Isaac is forced into an otherworldly battle that may cost him his soul. But if he wins, then he will emerge with a new power from a plane no one really knew how to access before. This battle was quite intense, but not in a physical way. Isaac is put to a moral and emotional test that really gives the reader a look into his past and what makes him tick deep inside.

All these events will come together in quite a fantastic way. New powers, new factions, and show-down with some really nasty baddies make this book a great read.

This isn't a romance so much as it is a reconnecting of souls. Bella will have to prove once again that Zsadist isn't the monster he believes himself to be. It's a touching story and a nice look deeper into their relationship. It was a sweet story of redemption and second chances, of leaning on those you love and allowing them to help you.

This was an amazing story! Alice is a hunter of bothersome otherworldly creatures - think poltergiests and other ghosty types. And they way she goes about it was really unique. The tool of her trade is an old-school camera named Trapper. As the story goes on, Trapper almost seems like a character unto itself, and I really loved the whole concept behind how it worked.

When a young girl is dragged into another realm by one of the worst haunts out there, Alice and Trapper won't be enough to get her back. Enter the very distinguished Isaac Moreau. I really like Isaac. As a mage and museum coordinator, he's just stuffy enough to be cute without getting overbearing. And Alice is going to need his magic to help get the girl back.

The measures they will have to take are extreme and dangerous. And the adventure that unfolds on the pages was amazing. Wrapping up with quite an epic battle scene that will really get your heart racing. There's a bit of a cliffhanger. You'll want to jump right into the second book in the series and see what they are going to next!

I had a really hard time with this one. I love the concept of the different dimensions and the alien bug-like creatures trying to invade ours. But...it just seems to have gotten a little too big for itself. I can tell the book is trying to ramp the plot line for an epic conclusion, but along the way, it just falls a little flat. It seems like the story is constantly trying to out-do itself over and over again.

Eventually, I started to fall into the story a little, but I couldn't really start to like some of the characters again. Their actions are selfish and manipulative, even though the book claims they are being altruistic and self-sacrificing. I just couldn't buy it. They didn't seem genuine.

It's too bad that it took this turn because the world was quite interesting. I don't know that I'll be finishing this series.

This was a hard book to rate. We start out with the story of Olivia and Wes, and their mission to take out a rival wizard mafia lord. And it was really exciting and I thought we were really going to get to know this unusual couple. I wanted to see how they met, how they fell in love, and how the rivalry began. But we don't. We skip right over their story and right into the story of Evie.

This transition was a little confusing. We don't see how the first scene ties into her story right away and it seemed like it was all out of place. I was also unsure as to why Evie was so protected by her mother. While this was explained eventually, knowing this ahead of time, even if it was just 'reader knowledge,' would have added a nice element to how the story built. The big reveal also seemed a little forced and out of place in the rest of the plot.

It meandered along, introducing us to a few of Evie's friends, and her too good to be true boyfriend. While I enjoyed the story a lot, I think it would have been better served as two books. One with the history of Wes and Olivia leading up to the mission that starts this book, and one that was dedicated to Evie's story. I loved the dark feel to this. K.N. Lee did a great job building atmosphere and characters, I'm curious what else will be coming out of Woodland Creek.

…He hadn’t let go of her hand. Energy flowed into her, and she lapped it like nectar. 

“Ye must be Angus.” She swallowed back an inane desire to giggle like a maid. “Since we’re the only two with human form here, ye’d almost have to be.” 

“Good guess.” His smile warmed his eyes. “Eletea and I have been here for a short time, and I was sent to guide you to the dragons’ council chamber. 

Self-conscious, she tugged her hand from his grip. It would never do to skip blithely into the Dragon Council holding hands like a couple of schoolkids. What if Keene was there? 

So what if he is? 

It’s not as if he’s made even the slightest effort to find me these past hundred years. 

Color splotched Angus’s face, and he glanced at his hand. “Sorry,” he mumbled. “Didn’t realize—” 

She didn’t bother telling him how difficult it was for her to sever their connection. Angus was stunning, but he’d been sent here by Ceridwen too. Which meant he lived much too close to home for her to consider smoothing her hands down that magnificent body and tangling them in all that wild, glorious hair. 

“Which way?” She tossed a sunny smile his direction. 

He smiled back shyly, and years fell away, making him look like a bashful boy, albeit a very hot one. “The way I came from.” He rolled his eyes. “Nothing like stating the obvious, huh? Anyway, we should get going, the dragons are waiting for us—and keeping Danne and Eletea from scratching each other’s eyes out.” 

“The dragon who brought me here said something about that. Apparently, Eletea has a mate who’s cheering from the sidelines.” 

Angus frowned. “He doesn’t want her dead, just—” 

“Shuttling on a ball and chain between the bedroom and the kitchen,” Arianrhod cut in. 

Angus tossed his head back and laughed. The sound was velvety, masculine, and it sparked a reaction deep inside her. She wanted him to be joyful, yet she sensed resignation within him and wondered about its source. 

“What you said about Cavet—that’s Eletea’s mate—about nailed it.” Angus half bowed, a courtly, old-world gesture that made her smile. “This way. We probably shouldn’t—” 

A cacophony of dragon shrieks and screams blew through his words, obliterating the last of them. 

Arianrhod had begun walking in the indicated direction, but she stopped dead. “Holy godhead. What the fuck do you suppose that’s all about?” 

“No idea, but it can’t be good.” He took off running, with her at his heels. 

She readied magic, sensing she might need to kill something, and power was quicker than her bow. Besides, it’d be a neat trick to take down a dragon—even with a crossbow. Possible, but very difficult. Smoke billowed through the tunnel, making her eyes tear. Her lungs smarted from inhaling smoke, and she pitched into Angus’s back because she couldn’t see a thing in front of her…h a benevolent sun, and of thriving cities filled with the bustle of humans; memories of quiet and intimate conversations beneath a silver moon, the same silver moon that now graced Malum Turris with its light, though a thousand years older and viewed only from beneath the protection of the dome.

She saw herself as he must have seen her, a much-younger icrathari, still hopeful for the future, never realizing that the Earth they had all known and loved was irretrievably lost. Had she ever looked that vulnerable? Had her smile ever been so beautiful, so filled with love as she looked upon—

“Rohkeus?” Oh, blessed Creator, was that stricken whisper her voice?

Ashra pulled back and stared at the human. Her mouth dropped open. Her heart pounded in her chest, its beat erratic. It couldn’t be. It simply couldn’t be—

She looked up at Tera. The other icrathari nodded.

Rohkeus’s soul reborn…in a human.

Ashra threw her head back and laughed, a despairing sound. Her prince, her love, reduced to a human? Her slender fingers coiled into fists. Her golden eyes glittering, she pushed away from him, though her body trembled from the loss of his warmth. No, the human was not Rohkeus; he could never be Rohkeus.

Steeling herself against the gasp of pain that escaped from his lips as the anesthetizing effect of her kiss faded, Ashra rose to her feet with sinuous grace. “He is not one of us. Not anymore.” Nothing had been more devastating than losing Rohkeus to a human assassin. To see his soul reborn in that contemptible and weak race was an insult to the person Rohkeus had been.

“Should we turn him into a vampire?” Tera asked.

“Kill him. Set Rohkeus’s soul free.”

Whisky Witches Excerpt

“Thanks for understanding.” Dexx opened the door to Paige’s room, supper in a bag in his teeth, his left arm full of folders.  

Brian followed him into the room carrying an over-filled case box. “To be honest, the fewer people who know how many rules I’m breaking right now, the better.”  

“Right.” Dexx dumped the folders on the small table and stashed supper in a chair. He pulled the round table closer to the center of the room, then wiggled the crocheted Brian doily out from under the paperwork, setting it on the bureau. He took the bottle of sedatives out of his jacket pocket before draping it over the back of a floral canvased chair.  

“How’s she doing?”  

Dexx sat on the edge of the bed and checked her pulse. Not that he counted her heartbeats like someone who actually knew what the hell he was doing. Half of him checked to make sure it was still beating in the first place. The other saw to the sigil on her arm. Black ink, just the way he’d left her. Good. He popped the top off the orange drug bottle and poured two little blue diazepam pills into his palm.  

“Are you sure you know what you’re doing?” 

“Sure.” Dexx shoved the two pills down her throat, feeling her tongue work as she fought to swallow and throw up at the same time. “Hand me that water bottle?”  

Brian touched the bottle to Dexx’s shoulder. “Tell me again why she’s not at the clinic.”  

“You really want a demon-possessed person running rampage in the clinic? Trust me.” Dexx dribbled some of the water down her throat, watching her swallow. “Also, I’m fairly certain the good doctor would try to tell you that the dosage we’re giving her would kill her.”  

“Will it?”  

“Doubt it.”  

“Doubt it?”  

“Demon.”  

“Right.”  

Dexx stood, screwing the cap back on the water bottle. “Okay. Where do we start on the case?”  

“Shouldn’t we wait for her?” Brian’s gaze stayed on Paige’s form.  

“I need to see if she’s really in danger or if we have someone out there mucking with stuff they don’t understand.” God, he hoped it was just some moron.  

“Okay.” The chief turned to the table. “What do you need to see?”  

After an hour of studying the pictures, notes, and interviews, Dexx pushed away from the table with a headache.  

Brian crossed his thick arms over his chest. “So what’s the verdict? Are we in danger?”  

“Yes.”  

“Is she in danger?”  

He wished she wasn’t. “Yes.” Dexx sighed and let his hands fall. “I don’t know how they found out about her gift, but someone did. The murders, the inane symbols? They were the bait. I’ve seen these symbols before on a past case. I doubt the sacrifices did much of anything. Whoever is behind this killed those three people to lure her out. The mandala was a test.”  

“What kind?”  

“I don’t know, but I don’t like it.
