Book Blash and Giveaway: Keeper of Reign by Emma Right

Keeper of Reign

Books written in blood. Most are lost, their Keepers with them. A curse that befell a people. A Kingdom with no King. Life couldn’t get more harrowing for the Elfies, a blend of Elves and Fairies. Or for sixteen-year-old Jules Blaze. Or could it?
For Jules, the heir of a Keeper, no less, suspects his family hides a forgotten secret. It was bad enough that his people, the Elfies of Reign, triggered a curse which reduced the entire inhabitants to a mere inch centuries ago. All because of one Keeper who failed his purpose. Even the King’s Ancient Books, did not help ward off that anathema.
Now, Gehzurolle, the evil lord, and his armies of Scorpents, seem bent on destroying Jules and his family. Why? Gehzurolle’s agents hunt for Jules as he journeys into enemy land to find the truth. Truth that could save him and his family, and possibly even reverse the age-long curse. Provided Jules doesn't get himself killed first.

Review: Keeper of Reign by Emma Right

Title: Keeper of Reign (Keeper of Reign #1)

Genre: Middle Grade Fantasy

Sixteen year old Jules Blaze, heir of a Keeper, suspects his family hides a forgotten secret. It's bad enough that his people, the Elfies of Reign, triggered a curse which reduced the entire inhabitants to a mere inch centuries ago. All because of one Keeper who failed his purpose. Even the King's Books, penned with the Majesty's own blood, did not help ward off this anathema. Now, Gehzurolle, the evil lord, and his armies of Scorpents, seem bent on destroying Jules and his family. Why? Gehzurolle's agents hunt for Jules as he journeys into enemy land to find the truth. Truth that could save him and his family, and possibly even reverse the age-long curse. Provided Jules doesn't get himself killed first.

The story of Keeper of Reign follow a group of Elfies as they try to re-unite with their lost families and find the solution for lifting the curse that has made them small.  The book is a great one for middle grade children (my 10 year old is reading right now).  It has easy to remember characters that each have their own unique personality.  Their interactions are quite amusing at times.  The plot runs very quickly with lots of actions.  As as adult, it was a little too non-stop for my taste, but kids will eat it up.  The short chapters are well organized and my daughter loves the feeling of accomplishment every time she comes to a new one.

Emma Right was able to create an atmosphere of suspense without utilizing a lot of violence.  As Jules and his siblings search for their kidnapped parents they come across quite a variety of helpful and not so helpful people.  Each encounter they have helps to teach Jules a little bit more about the mystery surrounding the curse and where his parents may have been taken.  Even when Jules thinks he has most of it figured out, he realized that things are not always as they seem.

The book ends with a happy ending, but a bit of a cliffhanger that will make you want to continue reading to see how they find their solution to lifting the curse.

Book Beginnings on Friday (4)

Book Beginnings on Friday at Rose City Reader is the place to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.

I'm about half way through a Middle Grade book Keeper Of Reign, Fantasy Series, Book 1 by Emma Right.  So far it's been a very exciting read with some very unique characters.

""Sire, you're running out of blood." Eleaser's voice quivered as he addressed the only other occupant in the royal chamber.

I know it sounds a bit gory to start - but it really isn't at all.
