Book Tour: Review and Giveaway: Neverlove and They All Fall Down by Angela Brown

Neverlove by Angela Brown
(Shadow Jumpers #1)
Publication date: October 8th 2012
Genres: New Adult, Paranormal, Romance

For seventeen-year-old Abigail, one rash decision leads to an unexpected chance for redemption. At V'Salicus Academy, a unique institute where she trains to become an agent of heaven, she struggles with the pain of her past, the changes of the present and accepts a loveless future until her path – and heart – crosses with Basil’s.

Basil's off-chance slip of the tongue binds him to a life of servitude to the Devourer, the master of hell. His existence has no upside until a chance meeting with Abigail brings new perspective.

Keeping the truth of their present lives from each other brings disaster when secrets are brought to light and the life of Abigail’s mentor is put on the line.

Can Abigail and Basil save her mentor and salvage their love amid the chaos? Or will they lose it all, destined forever to NEVERLOVE?

Abigail has had a pretty crappy life - so one day she decides to end it all, but fate has a different outcome for her.  Transported to V'Salicus Academy to become a Cleanser.  This transformation does more than give her a second chance at life, it gives her a chance to heal her past hurts and live a life she loves with people she cares about.  Basil is the opposite of Abigail, some bad luck leaves him in a deal with the devil and he becomes a Harvester of souls for hell.  When he meets Abigail, neither expecting who the other really is, they have an instant connection.

This story is about redemption and moving forward despite the odds stacked against you.  Abigail and Basil are both wonderful individuals and their personalities and goodness shine through on every page.  The world Angela Brown has developed for them is spectacular.  I loved how she described the inbetween world of Withers - it was very creepy.

They All Fall Down by Angela Brown
(Shadow Jumpers #2)
Publication date: October 1st, 2013
Genres: New Adult, Paranormal, Romance

Abby and Basil: New love reaches new heights as they finally give in to their lust and desire for each other.

Q: Consumed by the Devourer within and his base need to claim Abby as his own.

The crave: What it all boils down to. A crave for souls. A crave to keep love intact beyond betrayals. A crave for a second chance. A crave for power and The Fall of mankind.

“Love can conquer all” is put to the test and salvation may be impossible when they all fall down.

In book two of Shadow Jumpers we follow Abby and Basil as they fight against an old enemy with a new face and goal.  After the shocking ending of Neverlove, Q has an all new plan on becoming more powerful.  Abby and Basil are fighting for a life together, but that isn't a part of Q's plan for the world.  With all new crazy henchmen and a double agent or two to make things even more interesting, Abby and Basil are fighting for more than just their lives together this time.

Angela Brown expands her world and the lore dealing with Hell and the history of the Society, really rounding out the history and characters a lot.  The story line was much more involved and included many new characters while seamlessly working in some of the memorable side characters from book one.  It isn't too often I enjoy the second book more than the first, but this one far surpassed book one in my opinion.  I couldn't put it down.

Before I post the author bio, I just wanted to give some kudo's to Angela Brown.  I had the pleasure of hearing her speak at two sessions at the Indie Romance Convention about a month ago.  She was so much fun to listen to and I don't think I ever saw her without a smile on her face.  She was one of the more memorable authors for me.  Also, her voice - amazing - she should get a side job narrating audio books, I could listen to her all day long.

AUTHOR BIO: Born and raised in Little Rock, AR, Angela now calls Central Texas home.
Reading and writing have been lifelong passions. It was around the time she gave birth to her forever-love, nicknamed Chipmunk, that she really took writing seriously. After all, how could she teach her child to follow her dreams if she hadn't tried herself?
As a YA fantasy/sci-fi reader and author, she favors the magical, mysterious, the darker side of life...even harbors a secret fright for things that go bump in the night.

My Date From Hell
Tellulah Darling
(The Blooming Goddess Trilogy #2)
Publication date: October 31st 2013
Genres: Comedy, Mythology, Young Adult

Sophie Bloom’s junior year has been a bit of a train wreck. After the world’s greatest kiss re-awakened Sophie’s true identity as Persephone (Goddess of Spring and Savior of Humanity), she fought her dragon-lady guidance counselor to the death, navigated mean girl Bethany’s bitchy troublemaking, and dealt with the betrayal of her backstabbing ex, Kai (sexy Prince of Darkness). You’d think a girl could catch a break.

Yeah, right.

With Zeus stepping things up, it’s vital that Sophie retrieve Persephone’s memories and discover the location of the ritual to stop Zeus and Hades. So when Aphrodite strikes a deal that can unlock Sophie’s pre-mortal past, what choice does the teen goddess have but to accept?

The mission: stop media mogul Hermes from turning Bethany into a global mega-celebrity. The catch? Aphrodite partners Sophie and Kai to work together … and treat this suicide mission as a date. Which could work out for Sophie’s plan to force Kai to admit his feelings for her–if she doesn’t kill him first.

Add to that the fact that BFF Theo’s love life and other BFF Hannah’s actual life are in Sophie’s hands, and suddenly being a teenager—even a godlike one—seems a bit like … well, hell. Whatever happened to dinner and a movie?

The YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology fireworks continue to fly in My Date From Hell. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book two of this teen fantasy romance series. Breaking up is easy; dating is deadly.

Excerpt from My Date From Hell

The tigers herded me along for about fifteen minutes over soft, spongy ground with the occasional tree root to stumble over. Nothing slithered or skittered over my feet, for which I was profoundly grateful.
We stepped into a clearing in front of a large, clear pond with a waterfall. It was beautiful here. I almost forgot about my keepers until one of them pawed at me gently. I jumped at the slight rasp of its claws on my skirt and glared at it.
“You prefer lunch with a view?” I asked the tigers, pleased with my bravado. They sat down, hemming me in along the shore of the pond.A woman began to sing. Not in Greek. Not a hymn or a chant or a lullaby.
Nope. She sang of how her loneliness was killing her. Which sounds poetic, but was actually Britney Spears.
Another woman joined her. And another.
It was the best unplugged cover of “Hit Me Baby One More Time” that I’d ever heard.
Three young women swam out from behind the waterfall. They looked like triplets, with dusky olive skin, and long black hair all threaded through with silvery flowers that glinted as they caught the sunlight. Their voices soared as they entreated the object of their song to give them a sign.
My toes were tapping. And yeah, I hummed along. Whatever. It didn’t get to be a massive hit without being catchy.
The Diana Ross of the group swam forward and held out her hand.As if. I wasn’t jumping in.One of my feline jailers nudged me hard enough to push me in.Instead of being wet, I found myself floating underwater but in the air. The
women continued to sing, starting their song again as they somehow plucked orchids which did usually not grow underwater to weave in my hair.
By the time they had finished adorning me, I was singing, too.
I rose out of the waves. Light caught the spray of droplets, creating a thousand tiny prisms of color. Crooning my heart out with eternal angst, I was consumed with emotion. I had to sing.
This was the most poignant song ever written and I was the keeper of all the anguish.
Kai stepped out into the clearing and I sang to him. Sang this ageless story
that was our tale. About misunderstanding. About confession. And this burning need to know.
I walked out of the water and took Kai’s hands. Enfolded him in my arms then returned us to the pond. I sank with him beneath the waves into this place of air, my voice raised in lyrical pleading to show me that sign.
That’s when Kai tickled me.
As I started to laugh and could no longer sing, I realized that I was drowning him—not in air but in cold water—while burbling Britney Spears lyrics off- key, tears falling from my eyes like an overwrought teenybopper.
Jack hadn’t attacked me, psychologically or otherwise. No, he’d put me under the spell of the sirens and then made me their lead singer in an attempt to take Kai out. Thankfully, it hadn’t worked.I stumbled out of the pond and said casually, “Well, that was awkward.”

Book Tour: Review and Giveaway: Darkness Watching by Emma L. Adams

Title: Darkness Watching (Darkworld #1)
Author: Emma L. Adams
Source: Xpresso Book Tours
Genre: New Adult, Paranormal, Urban Fantasy
Release Date: October 10, 2013
Reviewed by: Jasmyn

Eighteen-year-old Ashlyn is one interview away from her future when she first sees the demons. She thinks she's losing her mind, but the truth is far more frightening: she can see into the Darkworld, the home of spirits– and the darkness is staring back.

Desperate to escape the demons, Ash accepts a place at a university in the small town of Blackstone, in the middle of nowhere - little knowing that it isn't coincidence that led her there but the pull of the Venantium, the sorcerers who maintain the barrier keeping demons from crossing from the Darkworld into our own world.

All-night parties, new friendships and a life without rules or limits are all part of the package of student life - but demons still stalk Ash, and their interest in her has attracted the attention of every sorcerer in the area. Ash is soon caught between her new life and a group of other students with a connection to the Darkworld, who could offer the answers she's looking for. The demons want something from her, and someone is determined to kill her before she can find out what it is.

In a world where darkness lurks beneath the surface, not everyone is what they appear to be...

Darkness Watching has a very interesting take on demons and sorcerers.  Ash begins to see strange black voids with glowing violet eyes that seem to be watching her.  At first she thinks she's losing her mind, but as she begins to notice other changes she begins to wonder if she's just seeing something others can't.

When she arrives at the seculded university in Blackstone she finds answers to many of her questions, but those answers only lead to a million more questions.  Ash is a great character.  I loved her little freak outs as new things happened and her strenght of mind to accept the answers once she realized they were true.  She meets quite a few interesting fellow students while at Blackstone and when a group that has similar abilities takes her under their wing the story really starts to move.

There a few characters I really disliked, even though I think I was supposed to enjoy them.  Some of the girls from Ash's flat were a little on the annoying side and didn't really behave like I would imagine university students to behave.  With a little bit of a romantic situation thrown in that seemed to take away from the story at first, but in the end was very important.

The ending was very surprising.  Several of Ash's questions are finally answered and she feels a little safer, but her answers are almost more frightening than the questions were to start with.  Although listed as the first in a series, there was enough resoultion at the end to satisfy me with a conclusion.

AUTHOR BIO
Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing fantasy and paranormal for young adults. She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. She also wrote various novels and short stories. These included her first publication, a rather bleak dystopian piece, and a disturbing story about a homicidal duck (which she hopes will never see the light of day).

Now a reluctant graduate, she can usually be found in front of her writing desk, creating weird and wonderful alternative worlds. Her debut novel The Puppet Spell, published in 2013 by Rowanvale Books, is a fantasy tale for young adults and the young at heart, inspired by her lifelong love of the fantastical, mythology, and video games. Emma also writes supernatural fantasy novels for older teens and adults. Her next book, Darkness Watching, is the first in the upper-YA/New Adult Darkworld series, and will be published in September 2013 by Curiosity Quills Press.

She believes in ghosts.

Medium and paranormal investigator Arabella Pierce is sent with her crew to Kingston Cottage, a haunted Maine seafarer’s cottage on an isolated island, but for this investigation, her boss has stuck them with skeptical reporter Lucas Brown. Though he’s hot as they come, Arabella can’t trust a man whose sole job is to discredit her and the work she does. Not after what happened with the last few skeptics...

He believes in evidence.

But Lucas isn’t as skeptical as he seems—he wants the truth, no matter what that is. When the ghosts appear, he and Arabella must work together—in tight quarters—to convince the resident ghosts to move on before a storm strands the entire crew on the island. If Arabella can put aside her prejudices, she and Lucas just might have a shot at a lifetime.

Arabella Pierce has had some bad luck with men in the past - both personally and professionally - and she's very hesitant to trush skeptic Lucas.  Lucas is determined to follow the famous ghost hunting team and prove to his readers if they are the real thing or just more fakes trying to make a quick buck.  He doesn't expect to fall head over heels for the lead investigator, Arrabella.

The story isn't just about Lucas and Arabella though.  It's also about a pair of ghosts that have been searching for a way back to each other for decades.  One of them isn't always so nice in the search and Arabella's team needs to find a way to deal with her or help her move on.

Ghosts of Kingston Cottage was the perfect read to kick off the week of Halloween.  Equal parts ghost story and romance, it had a bit of an eerie feel to it without losing the feeling of romance that ran throughout the entire story.  With happily ever afters all over the place, it was just about perfect.

I wanted Knox. There was no need to deny that fact.

Knox was the type of guy you gravitated to, who stood out in the crowd. It wasn’t just his classically good-looking features and perpetual five o’clock shadow. It was his raw energy that entranced me, that made me feel like a giggly, fumbling high school girl, happy to be in his presence.

Yes, there’s no denying it, front man Knox Gunner was a sexy badass.

It didn’t matter that he initially thought I was some bored, rich girl trying to live out some wild fantasy of being with a starving musician. It was uncomplicated and that’s what we both wanted. At least that’s what I convinced myself. I wasn’t ready to admit to myself that my feelings for Knox were getting dangerously deep—waiting to lay siege on my heart. I was falling for him… and this was dangerous. The rules were clear: falling in love would obligate me to expose what I truly was, setting in motion his slow march to death.

Spring Honeycutt wants two things: to ace her sustainable living thesis and to save the environment. Both seem hopelessly unobtainable until her college professor suggests that with a new angle, her paper could be published. Spring swears she’ll do whatever it takes to ensure that happens.

“Whatever it takes,” however, means forming a partnership with the very hot, very privileged, very conceited Henry Knightly.

Henry is Spring's only hope at publication, but he's also the über-rich son of a land developer and cash-strapped Spring’s polar opposite. Too bad she can't help being attracted to the way he pushes her buttons, both politically and physically. As they work on her thesis, Spring finds there's more to Henry than his old money and argyle sweaters…but can she drop the loud-and-proud act long enough to let him in? Suddenly, choosing between what she wants and what she needs puts Spring at odds with everything she believes in.

Definitely, Maybe in Love is a modern take on Pride and Prejudice that proves true love is worth risking a little pride.

Definitely, Maybe in Love takes a lot of influence from one of my all time favorite classics, Pride and Prejudice.  I can see and feel it on every page.  But it's not just a re-telling, it's a re-imagination of all the wonderful themes and characters.  Spring is headstrong and opinionated and is so proud of everything she stands for.  She is convinces that Henry Knightly is a rich pampered man that just doesn't get what is really going on.  So of course they have to fall in love with each other.

Their unusual relationship is very touching, and often humorous.  Ophelia London even managed to pull in several of the side story lines and find ways to use them to make her story even better - and give the reader a greater insight into both Spring and Henry.  There were a couple times where the story seemed to drag on a little bit, but overall the pace of the book was nice and relaxing - just a little excitement sprinkled here and there to make your heart start to race.

I think that anyone who is a fan of Pride and Prejudice will fall in love with this book.  I may even have to go visit my old copy of Pride and Prejudice again to reminisce over all the good memories.
